Brentwood, MO, is an inner-ring suburb of St. Louis, located in St. Louis County, Missouri. Brentwood (then called Maddenville) developed as a prosperous little town on the outskirts of St. Louis, connected to the city by a streetcar line. This development occurred because of its location on the Manchester Trail, a route mostly frequented by mail coaches and prairie schooners going west.
In 1919, inhabitants of the neighboring Maplewood debated on annexing Maddenville. In order to avoid annexation and establish their own school district, residents decided to incorporate into the village of Brentwood. Because of this, a rivalry between the two towns still exists today, in the neighboring towns’ school sports teams and students’ national test scores. And Brentwood is doing well. Brentwood High School won a National Blue Ribbon Award in 2006, and Mark Twain Elementary School received one in 2009.
