You’ll find St. Charles County in the eastern portion of Missouri. A part of the St. Louis, MO-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area, it contains many of the city’s northern suburbs. As a result, it is the third most populous county in Missouri. Organized October 1, 1812, it takes its name from an Italian cardinal Saint Charles Borromeo. The borders of St. Charles remain the same as they were in 1818. The wealthiest county in Missouri, St. Charles County is also one of the fastest growing counties in the nation.
Several wineries sit on its rural edge along the south-facing bluffs of the Missouri River. These wineries have been nationally recognized. The area includes the Augusta AVA, designated in 1980 as the first American Viticultural Area by the federal government. Two Rivers Wildlife Refuge includes part of St. Charles County. The Refuge consists of five separate parcels of riverine wetlands grouped in and around where the Illinois and the Mississippi Rivers meet (hence the name, Two Rivers). This region is noted for its population of bald eagles. The Katy Trail also begins in St. Charles County, offering a unique opportunity for visitors of all ages. The trail offers an avenue to discover the past for bicyclists, hikers, nature lovers, and history buffs alike. The county also has two small airports, St. Charles County Smartt Airport and St. Charles Airport. Additionally, it offers two ferries that cross the Mississippi River.
